The rose
Follow the stitches. They turn with every fold, so light lands differently on each one. Coral at the heart, almost white at the edge. No paint anywhere.
Raised silk
Blue bloom
Long, fine petals laid one over another until the flower lifts off the ground. A gold centre sits in the middle like a coin.
Raised silk
Violet
Purple, lilac and white curl around a raised golden heart. Get close enough and the stitches turn into brushstrokes.
Raised silk
Emerald
A large green cabochon, held in a raised mount of coiled gold thread. Smaller stones keep watch around it.
Named in the declaration
The row
Stones march along a curved band of the vessel. Each one sits in its own embroidered setting.
Rubies · pearls · turquoise
Rosette
Pale blue at the centre. Pearls around it. Then a dense halo of colour. A jeweller's idea, made by an embroiderer.
Turquoise · pearl
The vessel
Band after band of ornament. It gives the bouquet something heavy and precious to rise out of.
Tiers of thread and stone
Heart stone
Dead centre of the vessel. A faceted stone inside a ring of green cabochons and embroidered borders.
The centre
The name
At the foot of the work, in thread: Shams, Agra, India.
